Kente House: The Africana Institute of Canada

Kente House is an independent national institute of research, education and community engagement, specializing in Canada’s people of African descent, their communities and their organizations. Kente House has a national mandate to work with community partners across Canada to foster greater system connections, shared learning and collaboration. First, we collaborate with community partners to advance policy research, program learning and capacity development. Second, we coordinate national-level Black heritage education and promote public awareness of Black contributions to Canada’s prosperity.  Third, we engage with the voices of professionals and leaders from the black community to amplify their voices and drive strategic agenda. Challenges and Opportunities in a A New Decade

With a rapidly growing population will come opportunities and challenges. Already, across Canada, Black communities face old persistent problems, especially in the census metropolitan areas of Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Hamilton, Oshawa, and Québec City — where most Black Canadians live.

The first UN decade for People of African Descent ended in 2024. As we step into yet another decade, Black communities and organizations are committing afresh to leveraging their collective strengths and assets to secure positive social and economic outcomes across many areas such as education, health, justice, jobs and other areas.

Partnership for mutual and collective success. Working together for Black community advancement.

Kente House supports this collective commitment. We know this requires us working collaboratively, and not in silos. We need innovative ways to share information, build system capacity, improve the quality of our programming — together. We should mobilize our collective voices in policymaking and do all we can to ensure that Black children and youths can compete and succeed, and become recognized contributors to Canada’s prosperity. Kente House is is leading the way in mobilizing national partnerships with established organizations across areas of shared interest.

As a national institute, we facilitate  partnerships that support the collective outcomes  in community advancement driven by research and program learning, education and community engagement.
